Steven Baris
My work is influenced by the increasingly built-over and highly engineered landscapes that lie beyond the major cities and their suburbs. I am especially interested in those massive boxlike buildings commonly known as distribution centers that you see scattered alongside the many crisscrossing expressways. I am struck by how these over-scaled, decidedly horizontal structures overwhelm and reconfigure the surrounding “countryside.”
Similar to these postindustrial landscapes, my paintings are structured by seen and unseen geometries, replete with geometric forms, grids, and multiple parallel and converging projection systems. I like to exploit the ways that painted surfaces evoke rudimentary spatial experiences such as proximity, distance, orientation and disorientation. Ultimately I want my paintings to conjure up space that is highly elastic and ambiguous–simultaneously possible and impossible.
