Michael Calver
A painting starts with a series of trials using guide diagrams together with colored paper and tape. Ideas at this stage are fairly amorphous. They look over my shoulder as I work.
This cloud of nascent imagery owes something to my regular habit of drawing from buildings and streets—out of doors in the real world. It also shimmers with colors and forms arising from the virtual envelope in which increasingly we are all ensnared.
Out of this often lengthy period of apprenticeship some abstract structures will coalesce.
The work is finished when it is about nothing but painting. When it achieves a feeling-tone set by color allegiances as they knit space.
