I am interested in the relationship between desire and necessity, the clashing of the ideal and the actual. My work consists of paintings that use the whimsical vernacular of pop culture within the context of the Modernist tradition of geometric abstraction. The stripe/check patterns and colors function formally, but are also socially ubiquitous. The process is precise and methodical, but the compositions seem awkward and unresolved; elements are slightly misaligned or don’t fit. The images extend beyond the frame, creating ambiguity in their function of depicting and affecting space. The paintings are ironic in a sense, but they are not cynical. They are a celebration of the human within the rational.
