Joanne Freeman
My geometric abstract paintings are done with oil paint and cold wax. I cut and layer stenciled patterns using an underlying grid. The regularity of the grid is questioned as I both defy and adhere to its predetermined order. Through the manipulation of shapes and colors I’m able to play with negative-positive space relations and create multiple readings.
My work is indebted to the Bauhaus School philosophy that promoted the unification of art, craft and technology. Both functional and non-functional art inform my work. Visual classifications are merged and re-examined in the context of contemporary culture.
