Herman Van de Poll

Smilde, The Netherlands

My art has been influenced by modern scientific and mathematical approaches to understanding the complex order in nature. In particular, I have studied both chaos theory and fractal geometry. I am not a mathematician, and I don’t use mathematical formulas; however, the ideas of chaos theory and fractal geometry lead to the development of the compositions in my work.

I have used squares, triangles and circles in my paintings, but my current series, geoChao, focuses primarily on the square and relations among squares. I may develop my compositions by placing smaller squares over larger ones or larger squares over smaller. I allow the methods I choose to determine the composition. For example, I am presently exploring the methods of magic squares and Sudoku.
