Henry Brown
I describe my paintings as mechanically drawn geometric abstractions. My images are constructed from structural schematics drawn directly on the gessoed canvases with compass and ruler. I paint the images, but leave the underdrawings to function as visual elements in the finished work.
The surfaces of my paintings appear to be fixed spatially, but visual perception triggers sensations of movement. Depth shifts as surfaces advance and recede. Dynamic structure, linear perspective and changing figure-ground relationships animate my imagery. This illusionism transforms what seems to be flat and static into something in a state of change. Using geometry, symmetry, and pattern I create abstract paintings that have a perceptual basis.
