I use mostly straight lines, decisive, clean lines crossing the surface, undermining it. The surface of the canvas is balanced until you place a mark. It doesn’t matter how long and how wide. The surface is broken, and I have to continue adding lines, squares, rectangles or triangles until a new surface is achieved.
I approach painting as a puzzle. I look at the canvas and try to balance the new surface by adding additional lines and geometric forms. And my choice of colors helps to balance forms within a new surface (image).
I find it scary starting a new painting. Lines allow me to strike the surface, releasing the tension. The first straight line I draw on the canvas is a commitment to engage in building a new canvas.
