Eva Ryn Johannissen
My objective is not to talk about what the material world looks like, but rather to translate my experience of life into abstract poetic imagery. My paintings are usually based on very basic geometric shapes, particularly the square, but also sometimes, the triangle or the circle. In my work these shapes are never hard-edged as in geometric drawings. Instead I treat them like organic elements, as if they were objects in the process of disintegration, growth or perhaps vanishing from or entering our field of vision.
To me the drama that arises when these abstract elements meet and interact on the canvas becomes a reflection of the fundamental existential drama of contemporary life—a floating, continuously changing process rather than something static or unequivocal. Each pictorial element, in its interaction with all other elements, becomes an organic entity inviting the multiplicity of associations inherent in all human experience.
