My work has always combined elements of the rational and irrational, the geometric and the gestural. One is contained within the other; they are inseparable. These oil paintings on wood panel and linen and drawings in ink on paper are based on a geometric structure of repetitive and deliberate gesture that is meditative and intuitive. The work emerges from the grid, although verticals remain only vestigially. As I paint these horizontal bands, an element of chance is crucial. The surfaces and textures of the wood, linen or primed paper affect the application of the paint and resulting image. I work with and against whatever happens as I am painting. I am fascinated by the variations that can occur in a simultaneously layered and reductive image and in the light and rhythm created by repetitive yet varied linear form.
