I attempt to create abstractions that engender contemplation, interpretation and optical stimulation by using numerous layers of marks, visual references and blurred images.
The underlying platform of this process is centred around grids, lines, geometry and arithmetic.
Simplicity in the use of form and colour is paramount as is spatial depth and surface. My works range from 60 to 100 layers deep, finished with a rigorous sanding, leaving a perfectly smooth, translucent surface.
Works are inspired from various sources. They begin with a conceptual drawing followed by calculations, decisions on colour and process, the making of a scaled maquette, then the construction of the substrate.
Although highly planned, serendipity plays an important role in the final outcome, especially when painting using gravity.
Geometric form, colour and surface remain the key ingredients to my practice.
